QUICK REVIEW: Masaba Masaba, Netflix, 2020

Masaba Masaba (Netflix) ; Six episodes, Each episode 30 + minutes each: Neena Gupta, Masaba Gupta, Satyadeep Mishra, Neil Bhoopalam, etc.; Director Sonam Nair; Producer Ashvini Yardi.

By Neeraj Nanda

MELBOURNE, 24 September 2020: Neena Gupta and Masaba Gupta are mum and daughter in real life and in the episodes also. Neena is a long-time NSD trained actress since 1982 in movies and TV and Masaba is a fashion designer in Delhi. Masaba is the daughter of Neena Gupta and West Indian cricketer, Vivian Richards. Neena was seen in the successful movie Badhai Ho in 2018 and there were another four movies after that.

The six episodes are Rumour Has it, I Got It From My Mama, Man! I Feel Like A Woman, Bringing Sexy Back,
Work B**ch! and Hot Mess. All six deal with Masaba’s life journey until a fashion event that throws up many avoidable mishaps. Episode wise the single mum – divorced daughter relationship with all its fallbacks make an interesting watch. Life throws up its challenges as they move in the high society milieu. Professional life filters with personal ups and downs. Relationships come and go with a whimper.

Social scrutiny and life at mama’s home create ripples for Masaba. Comfort zones open up amidst din and fun. Neena lands up with a role after a long time (Badhai Ho) as Masaba’s messy (last episode) new collection event falls flat. Life goes on.

Neena and Masaba’s life episodes with the duo’s excellent acting give a refreshing take on elite professional women’s lives as they want it to be. With superb direction and a smooth screenplay, Masaba Masaba reflects one section of Indian women who can play with life as it comes. Unfortunately, this cannot be the choice of most women for whom every step is a struggle.

I give it 3 and half stars out of 5.
