Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent 2 days visit to India (December 5-6, 2025) has strengthened the country’s strategic partnership with Russia, with several key agreements signed across various sectors. President Putin’s warm welcome in New Delhi, will definately be noted in disdain by President Trump-led United States, and keenly observed by China which has good ties with Russia, but a long-standing border dispute with India.

Though, no agreement for defence equipment supplies was signed between India and Russia, the Putin visit, is no doubt, a strategic balancing act by India, in a multi-polar world.

The no invitation to Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, and Congress leader in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Khadake at the state dinner by India’s President in honour of President Putin, is generating controversy. But Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs was invited. Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera criticized Tharoor’s decision, stating it was inappropriate to accept the invitation when top leaders were excluded.

Key Outcomes:

– Economic Cooperation: India and Russia finalized an economic cooperation program until 2030, aiming to boost annual trade to $100 billion.
– Energy Supplies: Russia assured India of uninterrupted fuel supplies, despite US pressure to curb purchases of Russian oil.
– Defense Ties: Discussions focused on joint production of military equipment, including missiles and guns, and faster delivery of S-400 missile systems.
– Fertilizer Collaboration: A joint venture was announced to establish a urea plant in Russia, reducing India’s dependency on Chinese fertilizers.
– Logistics and Shipping: Agreements were signed to enhance trade logistics, streamline energy transport, and strengthen bilateral cooperation in shipping and mobility.

The visit underscores India’s commitment to maintaining strong ties with Russia, in the face of less-warm relations with the Trump administration over the tariffs issue.
