The International Cricket Council (ICC) has banned Deepak Agarwal, a blacklisted bookie from India from all cricket for two years, with a half year of that suspended after he acknowledged one charge of breaking the ICC Anti-Corruption Code.
Agarwal was charged as a member under the Code because of the reality he was one of the team owners of the Sindhi’s franchise in the 2018 T10 Cricket League. The charge is as per the following:
1. Article 2.4.7 – obstructing or delaying an investigation, including concealing, tampering with or destroying any documentation or other information that may be relevant to that investigation and / or that may be evidence of or may lead to the discovery of evidence of corrupt conduct under the ICC Anti-Corruption Code.
Under the arrangements of the Code, Mr Agarwal decided to concede the charges and concurred the assent with the ICC in lieu of an Anti-Corruption Tribunal hearing. Subject to him fulfilling conditions in regard of the suspended part of the assent, he will be allowed to continue his inclusion in the game on 27 October 2021.
Alex Marshall, ICC General Manager – Integrity stated:
“There were various instances of Mr Agarwal deterring and deferring our investigations and it was not only an erratic event. In any case, he made a brief confirmation of his break of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code and keeps on giving generous help to the ACU according to a few investigations including different members. This collaboration is reflected in his sanction.”
It should be noted that Deepak is known in the spot-fixing circle and the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit had kept the bookie under their constant surveillance for a long time. International Cricket Council (ICC) had blacklisted Deepak Agarwal for his infamous spot-fixing attempts in franchise cricket leagues including the international matches.
And Deepak Agarwal was the man who approached Bangladesh star Shakib Al Hasan for inside information. The International Cricket Council (ICC) banned Bangladesh star Shakib Al Hasan from all cricket for two years, with one year of that suspended, after he accepted three charges of breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code last year.
Deepak’s threat led to the death of a 29-year-old Indian cricketer in 2011. Indian police detained him back in April 2017 in the Indian city of Raigarh along with two of his supporters. Deepak was put behind the bars and he didn’t learn a lesson for his wrongdoing. After getting out of jail, Agarwal got back in full swing in his usual business of spot-fixing.
