India unveils World Para Athletics 2025 medals; Big Oz participation

NEW DELHI, MELBOURNE, 18 September, 2025: Host India today unveiled the medals of the IndianOil New Delhi 2025 World Para Athletics Championships, September 27 to October 5, 2025,  with the rousing song “Udaan Bhar” featuring rap elements, was launched during the medal unveiling.

The unveiled medals radiate the essence of para sport, Indian heritage, and sporting excellence. The front side of the medal features intricate motifs inspired by traditional Indian art, centering on the championship’s name and para-athletics icons: a wheelchair racer, a discus thrower, and the lotus—India’s national flower. The other side highlights inclusivity, with Braille above the “New Delhi 2025” inscription, a lotus-inspired pattern, modern geometric details, with an eye-catching blue ribbon.

Vanathi Srinivasan, MLA and Chief Patron of PCI (Paralympic Committee of India), said, “These medals tell stories of courage and perseverance. India welcomes the world with open arms, promising accessibility, inclusivity, and excellence. This championship is a powerful message—para-athletes are shaping history”.

Paralympic gold medalist Navdeep Singh said, “Every time I look at this medal, I see the drive to push harder. Winning it on home soil would be a dream for all Para-Athletes proving that disability is never an end”.

India has unveiled a 73-member squad for the championship.

Australian participation 

With a powerful mix of debutants and Paralympic champions, Australia’s largest Para-athletics team in a quarter of a century is bound for New Delhi, setting the stage for a new chapter on the road to Brisbane 2032.

Announced today by Australian Athletics at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre in Brisbane, the 51-strong squad is the second-biggest team Australia has sent to a World Para Athletics Championships and the largest team since the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games, marking a major step forward in the momentum of Australian Para-athletics.

Among the team are 11 Paralympic medallists including reigning world and Paralympic champions Vanessa Low (Long Jump T61) and James Turner (100m and 400m T36), who bring world-class pedigree to the squad.

The decorated duo are joined by 24 debutants, including the youngest team member at 14-years-old Lexie Brown (100m and 200m T47) and Queenslander Nathan Jason (100m T12), a former Para-swimmer who has already represented Australia on the international stage.

“I’m really looking forward to being there to watch this team take to the world stage in New Delhi,” said Australian Athletics CEO Simon Hollingsworth.

In all, the Jawaharlal Nehru (JLN) Stadium will host over 1000,  athletes during the championships. It will be the 12th edition of the World Para Athletics Championships and the largest Para sport event ever held in India.

The New Delhi 2025 World Para Athletics Championships competition programme will feature 186 medal events (101 men’s, 84 women’s and one mixed), 15 more than at the last edition of the championships in Kobe.
