PREVIEW: Tehran- Gripping Israeli spy series, Apple TV+, 2020

MELBOURNE: ‘Tehran’ is a gripping Israeli TV espionage thriller created by Moshe Zonder for the Israeli Channel Kan 11 and was premiered there on June 22, 2020. The Hebrew, Farsi, and English serial’s plot see a young Jewish (Iranian born) Tamar raised in Israel, is a Mossad agent and computer hacker, on a mission to Iran to disable the Iranian nuclear program. She is to neutralize Iranian airbases, making way for Israeli planes to bomb an Iranian nuclear plant and sabotaging its ambition to have a nuclear weapon. In Iran, she swaps identity with Jilia, in an electric company and takes her place as working there. There she tries to curtail power supply to the Iranian radar system, but the mission fails as she gets into a fight with her boss who tries to rape her as he thinks she is Jilia, and he is killed. She escapes, hides, and mixes with the locals and befriends pro-democracy activists. But she is hunted by Faraz, head of Investigations of the Revolutionary Guards. The series is shot in Athens, Greece.

The screenplay is by Moshe Zonder and Omar Shenher, the director is Daniel Syrkin and those starring include Niv Sultan, Navid Negahaban, Liaz Charhi, Menashe Noy, Shervin Alenabi among others. Variety calls the show – ‘…a show that looks at Iran through an alternately adversarial and nostalgic lens.’

The 8 episodes series is streaming at Apple TV+.
