A CRICKET match between Indian students and the Victorian police has been postponed after Tuesday’s attack on an Indian student in Melbourne, Cricket Victoria spokesperson Eivion Bowen said on Thursday(4 June). The match, organised by Cricket Victoria, was scheduled for Thursday (4 June). It was postponed by the Federation of Indian students in Australia (FISA) after Nardeep Kumar Singh, a nursing student, was attacked on Tuesday by a group of men demanding cigarettes and money.
“We decided to postpone it because there were two more incidents that took place since Tuesday and we want the cops to do their job, instead of playing cricket,” FISA’s president Amit Menghani said.
Bowen told HT Cricket Victoria hoped the match would promote cricket as a “vehicle” to bridge IndoAustralian relations after last week’s spate of assaults against Indian students.
“It’s about getting a positive message amongst what’s been quite a negative series of occurrences,” Bowen added.
