Victoria Premier slams One Nation–Libs, eyes Modi visit

MELBOURNE, 27 May 2026: Responding to a journalist’s question at a media conference at Parliament House, Premier Jacinta Allan said One Nation “is all about division, not providing solutions to the challenges faced by people.” She added that her Labor government is focused on delivering cost-of-living relief, “not cuts and division, as a Liberal–One Nation government would,” and is helping Victorians overcome current pressures with a strong economic environment in the state.

Premier Allan also emphasised the strength of Australia–India ties and the Albanese–Modi relationship ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s expected visit to Australia and Victoria in July. Responding to questions, she referred to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s visit to India and highlighted the continued growth in economic engagement between the two countries.

The Premier pointed to the Australia–India Free Trade Agreement and expressed interest in hosting a major bilateral sporting event. She said Modi’s visit, alongside Victoria’s large Indian diaspora, would provide a platform to further deepen ties.

Asked about the Prime Minister’s Melbourne itinerary, the Premier said, “PM Modi sets his own travel schedule, and we look forward to welcoming him.” On a question from SAT regarding the proposed Melbourne diaspora event site, which has faced some opposition, she said discussions are ongoing and details are still being finalised.

The Premier also outlined measures to address rising rents, noted ongoing Chinese investment in Victoria, and highlighted cost-of-living initiatives including free public transport until the end of May, followed by half-price fares through the rest of the year, as well as a 20 per cent reduction in vehicle registration fees. She also commented on the global implications of the Iran conflict.
