Melbourne: You can now fly to Delhi and Mumbai direct from here from November 1. A first in Australia the move is likely to strengthen trade and cultural ties between Victoria and India. Premier John Brumby and Industry and Trade Minister Jacinta Allan today signed a deal with Air India to fly daily direct services between Melbourne and Delhi out of Melbourne Airport, starting from 1 November this year.
According to Mr. Ravi Bhatia, National Vice Chairman, Australia India Business Council (AIBC), “These direct flights are important to support
the growth of Australia- India business and bilateral relationships at all levels. Moreover, Air India’s Melbourne operation will create 78 new jobs in Australia and will significantly reduce travel times between Australia and India.
A Premier’s office media release says, Mr Brumby said Air India’s decision to make Melbourne the destination for its first direct international flights to Australia was recognition of Victoria being Australia’s premier destination for Indian tourists and businesses.
Tourism Research Australia late last year showed a 17.4 percent increase in visitors from India to Victoria in the year to March 2010.

Great news but all depends how much it costs :).
Student prefer Air Asia as its cheap & reliable. Other double is Air India’s service. I had very bad experience with AI once flying from Mumbai to Singapore. Old & Grumpy Air Hostess 🙂
Any news if this is likely to happen from the 1st of Nov 2010? We are still waiting to hear about this.
