By Kumud Merani

Yes, the story of the delicious Rooh Afza drink during the partition is soul-refreshing. In fact, that’s what Rooh Afza means.

Known for its refreshing taste and cooling properties, this iconic pink and red drink has been popular in the sub-continent for over a century.

Rooh Afza, carries a rich history that mirrors the tumultuous events of the region. Created in 1907 by Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed in Old Delhi, the drink was initially conceived as a refreshing herbal concoction to combat the intense summer heat.

Little did he know that his creation would become a symbol of resilience and unity amidst the heartbreaking partition of India in 1947.

The partition, a cataclysmic event that divided the subcontinent into India and Pakistan, caused immense suffering and displacement. Families were torn apart, and communities were fractured. Hamdard, the manufacturer of the iconic Rooh Afza, was no exception during partition, the founder’s elder son stayed in India, but his younger son migrated to Pakistan. He took Rooh Afza along with him and set up new Hamdard in Karachi.

Amidst this chaos, Rooh Afza, with its soothing taste and cooling properties, offered a moment of solace to many. It became a shared memory, a taste of home for those uprooted from their lives.

The Hamdard Laboratories, the creators of Rooh Afza, also faced the challenges of partition. The family was divided, with one branch establishing operations in India and the other in Pakistan. Despite the geographical separation, the love for the drink remained unwavering. Both branches continued to produce Rooh Afza, ensuring its availability to millions across the newly formed nations.

Today, Rooh Afza stands as a testament to the enduring spirit.
