MELBOURNE, 14 July 2020: Amidst the deep COVID-19 crisis in Victoria laced with the five-days sudden lockdown of nine towers run by the Housing Commission and then the subsequent six weeks Metropolitan Melbourne lockdown, the Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC) has come out with a strongly worded statement condemning racism and committing to taking a leadership role in addressing racism in Victoria.
The VMC media release emailed to the SAT today evening says,” We unequivocally condemn all forms of racism, vilification or discrimination directed at someone because of their color, ethnicity, faith or national origin.
We condemn all forms of racism or vilification against First Nations people. We condemn anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, or any form of racism or vilification against Asian communities, African communities, or people of color.”
The VMC release talks of recognizing legislation in holding alleged racists to account, as it awaits the outcome of the Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry into Anti Vilification Protections, where the VMC has submitted* its views early this year. Though it says, “we know that legislation alone is not enough to change our society.”
