Dr. Ambedkar International Mission,Australia celebrates Ambedkar Jayanti

MELBOURNE, 30 March 2024: Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the Indian Constitution’s architect was today honoured on his 133rd birthday for his significant contribution and influence as a driver of change advocating social justice, equity, and human rights.

Organised by the Dr. Ambedkar International Mission (AIM), Australia as ‘Ambedkar Jayanti’ at The Edge, Federation Square, was attended by a large number of followers, supporters, scholars and families from across Australia.

The Edge, was was decorated with banners, balloons, to mark the occasion and the ambience was serious and that of reverence. There was a prayer, welcome song, homage and an introduction of the day’s celebration theme. An exhibition of books graced the occasion.

The leading scholars and thinkers who addressed the gathering present and from India via video, were Prof. Peter Friedlander (ANU, Canberra), Mr. Atul Bhosekar (Historian & Buddhist scholar), Mr. Adharrao Birhade (Retired Assistant Principal), Mr. Mangesh Dahiwale (Ambedkarite Buddhist Thinkr) , Prof. Vivek Kumar , and Mr. Gaurav Somwanshi, reflected on the thoughts, contributions and times of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar.

The theme of  ‘cultural identity’ was explained and the seven cardinal teachings of Buddha elaborated. The contribution of Buddhism to India and the world detailed. The importance of having a mission statement was pressed. And, how one’s thought today is influenced by external forces.

The day long event’s presentations also included, Bhim songs, poetry, drama, soulful songs and Lezim Group dance. The program wrapped up with cake cutting, prize distribution, and the Indian and Australian national anthems.
