MELBOURNE, 1 Sept 2020: The brawl between two Indian youth groups in Harris Park, Sydney on Friday (28 August 2020), has been condemned by a community meeting held on 31 August evening called to promote harmony and diffuse any tension. The meeting also demanded strict action against those involved in the brawl.
SBS Punjabi reports two youths in their 30s were later arrested and charged. They will face a Parramatta court on 7 October.
The fight between the two groups, locals say, was fixed on Tik Tok after a Tik Tok verbal duel between two persons belonging to two different Indian communities and they decided to meet at Harris Park at 10 pm and that’s what happened.
Videos of the brawl were widely shared on Tik Tok and YouTube and the incident was reported by Ch-9. One video shows separatist slogans by one group and the other group raising different slogans. One person who was hurt in the brawl could also be seen lying on the road.
After the virtual meeting held to pacify the issue, Acting Minister for Multiculturalism in NSW Geoff Lee was quoted by SBS Punjabi as saying, ”
“I thank our Australian Indian community for their united leadership on this matter and their efforts to ensure overseas issues and conflicts do not impact on the harmonious relationships between communities in NSW.”
“NSW is a proud multicultural state, our diversity is one of our greatest social assets,” he added.
