MELBOURNE, 12 October 2022: About himself, Deepak Joshi says, ” I am a local entrepreneur, theatre artist, and community advocate. I’m ready to represent the community of Warrandyte – we’ve been taken for granted by the major parties for too long.

We need urgent action to address the rising cost of living. Education, health, aged care, and transport haven’t received the attention that we need, and our community has struggled to attract the investment in the infrastructure we need.”

Two-party-preferred (2PP) results from the 2018 State election in Warrandyte, based on the old and new electoral boundaries were ALP 46.1 % and Liberal 53.9 %. The Greens got 10.37% votes in the first preference (3927) and after preference 12.74 % (4828). Ryan Smith (Liberal) is the sitting member.

The Greens site says, ” The Greens will push the government to address these issues, as well as protecting parklands and reserves that serve the people of our community. We will also push for more walking and cycling connections throughout the area and tackle the climate crisis by replacing coal and gas with 100% renewable energy by 2030.”

Born in Nainital and raised in Delhi, Deepak Joshi came to Australia 25 years ago. He has worked in the corporate sector and the Australian Public Service. He is now an entrepreneur and runs an online current affairs platform, NRI Affairs, for overseas South Asians to stay connected with their culture. According to Joshi, NRI Affairs is also part of a broader effort of community transformation and advocacy aimed at mobilising overseas Indians to social justice causes.

As an India-born Australian, he told SAT what also concerns him is the lack of diversity in the State Parliament. He believes it is a deterrent for members of culturally and linguistically diverse communities from entering public life.

Deepak Joshi is a co-founder of The Humanism Project (THP), an Australian not-for-profit social justice advocacy group that represents the broad cultural, religious and regional diversity of India in Australia. He is also one of the founders of Hindus for Human Rights Australia and New Zealand.

His nomination and election, Joshi believes, will encourage progressive Australians from the South Asian and other CALD communities to participate in the Australian democratic process.

Joshi says he was nominated to represent the Greens because he wants faster action on climate change, a more equitable society, and an honest, clean government. Equally importantly, he says he wants to provide the representation his electorate of Warrandyte deserves by listening, understanding, and responding to the needs of all his communities in order to make the electorate a better place to live, work and conduct business.
