MELBOURNE (ROWVILLE), 10 April 2024: The Knox City Meal Delivery Program today kicked off from the Indian Community Centre here, with great enthusiasm and fanfare. The once a week (every Wednesday) program will operate from the Commercial Kitchen, now open at the Centre. With the support of Bright Sparqe, a charity portal, and coordination with church groups and charities will pick up the freshly cooked meals from the Indian Community Centre.

The function was addressed by the Knox Mayor, Cr Jude Dwight, Dr. Sushil Kumar, India’s Consul General in Victoria, and Viv Nguyen’s, VMC Chairperson. The speakers congratulated the  Indian Senior Citizens Association (ISCA) for the initiative and donating $ 80,000 for the Commercial Kitchen.

The Commercial Kitchen was funded by the ISCA, during the COVID-19 pandemic. With their generous financial support of $80,000, the AICCT managed to complete the commercial kitchen. The ISCA members meet at the community centre weekly for their meetings and hold annual events during the year.

During the lockdowns in Victoria, the Mental Health Foundation Australia (MHFA), in partnership with many Indian and multicultural community organisations and Indian restaurants, delivered 165,000 meals.

There was big support from the Department of Health and Human Services Victoria and Victoria Police. Plus, many multicultural volunteers from 60 community groups joined in meal preparation and delivery to needy Victorians.

With support from the Mental Health Foundation Australia (MHFA) the program aims to assist the community in many ways, especially those in need of immediate assistance and support. We are planning to deliver 500 plus freshly cooked vegetarian meals within the City of Knox.

The AICCT is planning to work with the Indian community and other multicultural community organisations to be part of this giving process. To get involved, we ask anyone who is able, to donate groceries/staples or a sum (anything over $2 is tax deductible).
