Melbourne: The Immigration Minister Senator Chris Evans has in a media release today clarified that overseas students currently studying in Australia will still have options to seek permanent residence in Australia if they have the skills. Changes to Australia’s skilled migration system were announced yesterday by the Minister.
Important points made today:
1. International students currently studying in Australia who hold a vocational, higher education or postgraduate student visa will still be able to apply for permanent residence (PR) if their occupation is on the new Skilled Occupations List (SOL).
2. The SOL will be available in April and will be reviewed annually.
3. Students currently studying a course in an occupation that is not on the new SOL will have until the end of 2012 to apply for a temporary skilled graduate visa which will enable them to spend up to 18 months in Australia to acquire work experience and find an Australian employer willing to sponsor them on completion of their course.
