Melbourne, 16 September: Director Nikhil Advani’s new relationship movie Katti Batti starring Kangna Ranaut and Imran Khan is all set to release on September 18. We heard Kangna, Imran Khan and Nikhil Advani answering media questions during a media conference at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2015 recently. They were also at the Telstra Dance Competition at the Federation Square. The films trailer was released some time back. I met the trio at Nikhil Advani’s office in Mumbai recently and interviewed Imran Khan.
But seeing the 25 minutes preview of Katti Batti at Nikhil’s office clearly indicated the movie was all about the ups and downs of a relationship between a young couple (Imran and Kangna). Things change dramatically and unexpectedly in this beautiful and exciting live-in relationship after five years as the time comes to cement it. The de facto relationship had negated the very concept of a married life. Nothing can be taken for granted as the dream sours.
In ‘Queen’ the protagonist Kangna sets out boldly to overcome the sudden loss of marital bliss even before it starts. A message that a woman’s life is much more than being married or unmarried. In Katti Batti she takes it further after a rather longish live in relationship derailing into a flux midway after Imran, almost a modern Devdas, proposes her to tie the knot.
Frank dialogues and the couple’s togetherness and subsequently Imran’s determination not to accept defeat and get back his lost love remains potent stuff.
The movie has six songs – Lip to Lip, Safira, Sau Aansoon, Jaago Mohan Pyaare and Ove Janiya.
The relationship theme has been running well in Kangna’s earlier movies also but here a live in relationship that negates the traditional ‘sati savatri’ scenario is likely to irritate the conservative elements.
It remains to be seen how the Indian or subcontinent middle class youth though modern and changing but quite conservative on gender issues will digest a live in relationship. Or things are changing? Aamir Khan is said to have cried after seeing the movie. Nikhil Advani told NDTV, “It’s a tearjerker. The last 22 minutes and I literally had to sit and hold the tissue box for Aamir Khan.”
Looks interesting and a sure watch.
