NGV Triennial 2026:100 artists, 35 countries 13 Dec,2026-11 April,2027

MELBOURNE, 15 April, 2026: A bonanza for art lovers in Melbourne and Australia kicks off this year end that will light up the art world. The 2026 NGV Triennial, opening 13 December 2026 at NGV International in Melbourne, is a major free exhibition showcasing contemporary art, design, architecture, and fashion.
It features nearly 100 artists and collectives from 35 countries, with over 80 projects—including 25 world-premiere commissions—and more than 70 new works entering the NGV Collection.The exhibition explores themes of transformation (material, cultural, technological, personal, political, and societal) across all levels of the gallery. It opens with two major site-specific installations in the Forecourt and Waterwall:
  • Angelina Karadada Boona (Wunambal Gaambera/Worrora, Australia) presents a glowing Wandjina ancestral figure on the Waterwall, reminding viewers of their connection to and impact on Country.
  • Najla El Zein (Lebanese-French) creates a carved limestone sculpture designed for public gathering, sitting, and interaction.

Key highlights include:

  • Large-scale works by Pamela Rosenkranz (Switzerland), Zanele Muholi (South Africa), Jenny Holzer (USA), Sarah Sze (USA), Wolfgang Tillmans (Germany), Shilpa Gupta (India), Christine Sun Kim (USA), Chinar Farooqui (India), and others.
  • Participatory pieces such as Louise Paramor’s giant chess set and Wendy Red Star’s interactive multimedia installation.
  • Video and installation works by Martine Syms, Mika Rottenberg, and Yvonne Todd.
  • A special children’s exhibition by Mika Rottenberg titled Squish, Twist, Fizz.

Previous editions (2017 and 2023) each attracted over 1 million visitors, making the Triennial one of Australia’s most popular exhibitions.
